Christian Howes Workshop on Improvisation

I recently completed a seven-week course on improvisation with Christian Howes of the Creative Strings Workshop. Chris is renowned for both classical playing and his innovative approach to jazz and other music styles.

Several members of the class were classical players who were used to reading music. They could barely improvise. Chris’s approach involved taking a short phrase of music and playing it over and over. After a few repetitions, Chris advises varying only one aspect of the phrase at a time, improvising on the phrase is more manageable. What a great idea!

I enjoyed the course very much! For more of Chris’s ideas, go to his website!
